Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium key information:

The Pupil Premium grant is additional funding for schools to support disadvantaged students, and to close the ‘gaps’ between our Pupil Premium-eligible students and their peers, such as attendance and KS4 progress. You can check whether your child is eligible for The Pupil Premium, here. Importantly, though, the Pupil Premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils, and schools are not required to spend the Pupil Premium so that it solely benefits pupils who meet the funding criteria.

Our ethos:

Our aim at Brighton Hill Community School is to ensure that all of our students, including those where circumstances may put them at a disadvantage to their peers, have a happy, safe and effective learning environment. From this, we hope they can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful, both during their time with us and in later life.

This ethos of Making Success Inevitable for our students is embodied in our four cornerstones, and underpin the key principles within our approach to supporting our disadvantaged students.

The principles, adapted from Equity in Education (2023) are:

  • Equity, not equality – showing a commitment to going above and beyond to overcome the additional barriers that disadvantaged students may experience.
  • Having a Capacity Mindset – working in collaboration with our students and their families to ensure we are tailoring our provision to suit the needs of our disadvantaged students, and not just expecting them to fit into a ‘one size fits all’ mould.
  • Building Rich Relationships - developing individual relationships with our disadvantaged pupils and their families, that are built on kindness and understanding.
  • Celebrating Multiple Talents - acknowledging that human talents come in many forms and having the courage to step away from traditional expectations of only recognising academic achievements.

Our approach:

We are committed to following an evidence-based approach when developing our Pupil Premium strategy, and therefore follow guidance and recommendations from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF)’s Guide to the Pupil Premium.

In line with these EEF recommendations, we have adopted a ‘tiered approach’ to allocating our funding, as detailed in the below graphic, adapted from the EEF model:
