Helping Your Child Through Their Menstrual Cycle: A Parent’s Guide

For many young people, starting and managing their period can feel overwhelming. As parents and carers, you play a vital role in supporting your child through these changes. At Brighton Hill, we are committed to working with you to make sure that no student’s education is disrupted by their menstrual cycle

Why Menstrual Support Matters

Periods bring more than just physical changes. Cramps, mood swings, anxiety, and sometimes medical conditions like PCOS can make school life more difficult. We also know that attendance can dip for girls, especially as they move from Year 7 into Year 8. That’s why your understanding and support at home is so important.

Talking About Periods at Home

For many families, periods have been a sensitive or even “taboo” subject. Breaking down that barrier is one of the best ways you can support your child.

Here are some tips:

  • Be sensitive – starting periods is a big change, and emotions may run high.

  • Normalise periods – treat them as a natural part of life, not something to be embarrassed about.

  • Keep the conversation open – encourage your child to ask questions.

  • Use trusted resources – websites like Hey Girls, The Period Place, and the NHS provide reliable guidance.

How We Support in School

At Brighton Hill, we'll try to make sure no student has to struggle alone. Free sanitary products and essentials are available in toilets, the Well-Being Centre, and the Medical Room. These include:

  • Pads and tampons

  • Spare underwear and tights

  • Heat pads for cramps

If your child ever feels unsure or uncomfortable, they can speak to:

  • Mrs Mallin in the Medical Room

  • The Well-Being Centre team

  • Their Tutor

  • Our Equality and Rights Advocates

Understanding Period Poverty

Some families face financial challenges that make accessing period products difficult. This is known as period poverty, and it affects millions of people worldwide. If you are struggling, please reach out to Miss Jawad at fjawad@bhcs.sfet.org.uk. You can also check if your child qualifies for Free School Meals support, which may provide additional help.

Periods and Lesson Time

We know students need to stay in lessons, so toilet breaks are normally taken at break or lunch. However, if your child urgently needs to go during class because of their period, teachers will absolutely allow it.

If your child feels too shy to ask, you can:

  • Reassure them that teachers understand and will support them

  • Email their tutor or teachers directly to explain their needs

  • Encourage them to let staff know quietly, rather than trying to “cope” alone

Working Together

Your support makes a huge difference in how your child experiences their period, both at home and at school. Together, we can make sure their education continues without disruption.
