Reader Pens
Supporting Independent Reading: Reader Pens
At Brighton Hill Community School, we are committed to making success inevitable by ensuring that every student can fully access learning. We recognise that reading can present significant challenges for learners with dyslexia and other literacy needs. To remove these barriers and promote independence, we use Reader Pens, highly effective assistive technology that allows students to access text with confidence.
What are Reader Pens?
Reader pens are handheld scanning devices that read printed text aloud instantly. By simply gliding the pen across a word, sentence or paragraph, students hear the text spoken back to them, supporting both decoding and understanding in real time.

These devices use advanced optical character recognition (OCR) and text-to-speech technology to convert written words into audio, making them a powerful tool for learners with dyslexia.
Many reader pens also include:
- Built-in dictionaries to support vocabulary development
- Audio playback through speakers or headphones for flexible use
- Standalone functionality with no need for Wi-Fi or additional software
- Additional features such as translation or text storage in some models
How they support our students
Aligned with our commitment to inclusive learning, Reader Pens ensure that difficulties with reading do not prevent students from accessing the curriculum or demonstrating their understanding.
- Immediate access to text allows students to keep pace with lessons, removing the barrier of slow or effortful decoding.
- Improved comprehension is achieved by combining visual and auditory input, helping students better process and retain information.
- Increased independence means students can work without relying on adult support, both in lessons and during assessments.
- Reduced cognitive load and fatigue allows learners to focus on understanding rather than struggling to read each word.
- Enhanced confidence develops as students experience consistent success and can engage fully alongside their peers.
Our commitment
We believe that every student should be able to access learning confidently and independently. Reader Pens are one of the ways we ensure that:
- barriers to reading are removed quickly and effectively
- students can demonstrate their true ability across all subjects
- support promotes dignity, independence and long-term success
By combining high-quality teaching with carefully chosen assistive technology, we continue to deliver on our promise of making success inevitable, ensuring that every learner can read, understand and succeed.
